Why should I get a library card?

If you’re the type of person who can’t live without knowing that there’s a stack of books somewhere in your house waiting for you, the answer is pretty obvious. Your local public library is a cost-attractive alternative to constantly buying books.

If, on the other hand, you’re not a big reader, we still have lots of wonderful options; DVDs, audio books – downloadable or on CD, magazines, large-print books, eBooks, streaming video, and lifelong learning classes.

And, even if you don’t read for fun, you may find that you need to refer to a book from time to time; car repair, diet, health, exercise, hanging wallpaper are a few things that may bring you to our doors.

And finally, through your library card, you have access to many databases: For example, foreign language, school and professional testing, genealogy, full-text newspapers and magazines, such as the NY Times. This is all information that isn’t found on the Internet without a subscription.

How do I get a library card?

You are eligible for a library card at the East Fishkill Community Library if you have proof of local residency.  A driver’s license with your current local address is good. If you’ve just moved to the area and your driver’s license has your old address, bring along a bill or some other document showing your current address.

Once you have your card, you’ll need a PIN to access digital services and login to your account.  Scroll down for instructions or click here.

You can also apply for a digital card by clicking here.

How old does my child have to be to get a library card?

Your child can get his or her own library card once enrolled in kindergarten. He doesn’t have to be able to sign his name or read. As the parent, you will be responsible for anything your minor child takes out should it get damaged or lost.

Does my library card expire?

Your card “expires” every three years, at which time we’ll ask for verification of your address and phone number and any other personal information you shared when getting your card initially. This is done so that our database of patrons stays current as people move and change phone numbers and email addresses. Once we update the information, you’re good for another three years. Your card and its unique number do not need to be changed.

If I have a library card from one Mid-Hudson library, can I use it at another?

Yes. All 66 member libraries of the Mid-Hudson Library System work cooperatively to bring you the best library service possible. You can use your East Fishkill library card at any Mid-Hudson library and you can order books and other materials online from any Mid-Hudson library. The only things that may be denied to you is access to certain local materials (such as museum passes or some digital products) that are purchased by a library for its own patrons.

How many libraries are in the Mid-Hudson system?

There are 66 libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System spread over five counties; Putnam, Dutchess, Columbia, Greene and Ulster. Each library is chartered by the Division of Library Development which is part of the Department of Regents. Each library is run by its own local board of trustees and creates its own policies and procedures although all of the libraries agree to share materials equitably under one set of rules.

Why do you ask me for my email address when I apply for a library card?

If you reserve books and other library materials or have foverdue books, email is the most cost-effective way to notify you. We can also send you newsletters by email (which, of course, you can opt out of). You aren’t required to give your email address however, and we can contact you by telephone or US mail should you prefer.

Do you share or sell any of my personal information?

Never. All of the information that you provide when applying for a library card is kept by the library for library use only. We never share or sell your information.

What format are the library cards?

When you receive your library card, you actually get two cards; one for your wallet and one for your key chain. If you use an app to manage your store and credit cards, we can scan that as well.

Will you send me a reminder when my books are due?

If you’ve provided your email address, you’ll get a notice from the Mid-Hudson Library System that your item is due.  If you do nothing, and there are no holds on that item, it will automatically renew for the same amount of time as the initial checkout; it can renew twice before it’s due.

If you haven’t shared your email address with us, you will not receive a notice from MHLS.

Is there another way for me to keep track of my loans and holds?

If you log onto you library account you can keep track of your holds and loans, pay for your overdue fines with a credit card and much more.

What do I need to log into my library account?

You’ll need your library card number and a PIN. When you get a new library card, we’ll assign you a PIN so that you can login to the catalog.  You can edit your account by going to the upper right and clicking on the LOGIN link.  Once in, click on your name and then click on it again.  You’re now in your account where you can change some of your information – but not all of it.  As with any technology-driven product, the environment changes, so   contact us with any questions, any time.
