Get the skinny on publishers and eBooks.

eBooks and eReaders have hit the big time and are now ubiquitous, and as many of you already know you can download eBooks from the Mid-Hudson Library System. In looking at the offerings you might wonder why there aren’t more eBooks available for download.

The problem is two-fold. One can be fixed with money and the other… not so much.

MHLS is responsible for purchasing eBooks using money that all of the libraries contribute. We work as a group to determine how much money we want to put in the pool – and that has been increasing and will most likely continue to do so.

But the real challenge is that there are very few publishers that actually allow eBooks to be purchased and loaned by libraries. Believe it or not, the old way of buying a book just doesn’t work with econtent and libraries are forced to work within the complicated constraints developed by publishers concerned about their bottom line. You may have heard about HarperCollins, a publisher which does sell to libraries but decided about one year ago to alter the definition of the word “sell” to mean “good for 26 circulations”. And, in fact, the argument can be made that libraries never really owned the eBook but purchased a restricted license instead.

To add another layer to the mix, libraries can’t purchase directly from publishers but have to go through a third party. This isn’t intrinsically a bad thing – it allows the third party, in this case it’s Overdrive, to negotiate and develop software solutions. However, that service comes with a price tag of it’s own which contributes to the “money” referenced earlier.

If you’re interested in letting your voice be heard, here’s a list of publishers that refuse to sell eBooks to libraries. Next time you’re looking for a good book to download think of them if you can’t find anything to your liking.

Social networking and reviews help you find the stores and businesses you want to shop at.Here's how Yelp! works...

Perhaps you know Yelp! as something you do when your sibling puts ice-cubes down your back, or maybe it’s the sound that your dog makes when you accidentally step on her tail. But in the social networking world, Yelp! is a find and review service and community.

Say you’re looking for someplace new to eat, or for someone to repair your favorite Blahniks or maybe a dentist. You type in your search terms and the area or zip code and when you hit enter you’ll get a list of results. And, better yet, if other people have been to those businesses, you’ll have some reviews to peruse to help you narrow down your choices. If you sign up for your own account you’ll be able to leave reviews of your own that will help other people…and so on down the line.

You may not be entirely surprised to find out that the East Fishkill Community Library has a page on Yelp! and we would just LOVE it if you would write a review. Tell the Yelp! community what you like about your local library. And, when you’re traveling, don’t forget to search for other libraries so that you can visit them too!

Here’s an article about Yelp! and here’s a shortcut to our Yelp! page.

Melina Makris talks with Youth Services Librarian Cathy Nuding about Credo a wonderful research tool that you can use from home 24/7. To use Credo, click on the “Credo” link in the Books and More box to the left. To sign into any database, you’ll need your library card and PIN. Only East Fishkill residents have access to Credo.

Below is a short tutorial on how to use Credo to find the text of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. (PS – There’s no sound on this clip…)

Melina Makris interviewed Raymonda Crowe, one of the artists who displayed her work at the library. We think you’ll enjoy hearing about how Raymonda got interested in quilting scenes with pomegranates. And as we’re posting this on February 14 – Valentine’s Day – it might be a good time to mention that pomegranates are often associated with love.
